The New York Times admitted it ran a fake letter it received by e-mail Monday. The letter was purported to be from the mayor of Paris and was signed Bertrand Delanoe. The writer was critical of Caroline Kennedy's bid for a senate seat, calling it "appalling" and undemocratic. It then connected the bid to "American decline."
The New York Times failed to double-check its source and ran the e-mail prematurely. Spokespeople say they already apologized to Mr. Delanoe's office. In a statement on its website, the New York Times said running the letter "...violated both our standards and our procedures in publishing signed letters from our readers." It further said it was in the process of reviewing those procedures.
