Believe it or not, I finally found the smell and I had a pretty good idea what it was all along!
I have a habit of putting whatever I am drinking in the freezer when I do something else. For example, if I am going to take a shower, I'll throw my glass o Coke in the freezer. I got in the habit of doing that because I often buy Coke in cans (as opposed to 2-liters, etc.) and I don't like to waste it, so I throw the glass in the freezer, along with the can (if it half-full - or half-empty, if you prefer). Of course, this is not always a good habit because I sometimes forget that I have thrown my drink in the freezer, and cans will bust, glasses will freeze-over - I even had one glass shatter!
So a while ago, I'd thrown a beer up there, and then forgot about it. The next morning, it had burst and run all over the frozen goods and interior of the compartment. I cleaned it up as well as I could and went on about my busy week. Everything was fine for a few days, but then I started smelling that funky-assed stench, so I opened the freezer and re-cleaned everything, picking up frozen goods and rinsing them off - the whole nine.
Well, earlier, I moved some stuff around and, apparently, the frozen brew had reached much farther than I'd realized - under stuff I'd already cleaned and along the sides of things I didn't think had been affected. It still smells slightly funky, so I'm going to have to literally take everything out and really clean the hell out of it sometime this week.
But now that I've gotten that out of the way, I should have more time to be here.
