Writing can be fun and exciting (if you like sitting around, typing all day long), but rarely financially rewarding. Most writers make their way through life by working jobs not related to the subject at all. A lot of writers also have degrees and skills sets in subjects unrelated to writing, and if you happen to meet the requirements, a laboratory assistant job is pretty sweet. You get benefits, insurance, and (of course) a fat paycheck. Although the job is demanding, it's completely on-site; you don't bring your work home, so you can focus on writing when you're not at work.
