Russian investigative journalist and outspoken Putin opponent, Anna Politkovskaya, was shot once by a single gunman as she left for work in October, 2006. The murder was captured on closed-circuit television, but police have been unable to identify the murderer. Until now...
Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika told reporters Tuesday that ten people have been charged with the death, including Russian police and security officers. But specific stress was given to the fact that those who organized the hit were not from Russia, which at least one colleague of Politkovskaya's says is suspect.
"There is no evidence of evil forces from abroad being involved. It reminds me of the practice in the Soviet Union when for every problem inside the country, top officials blamed usually somebody from the West." Said Roman Shleynov, editor of the newspaper at which the late reporter worked.
Politkovskaya's death was condemned by the international community and has raised suspicions as to Putin's protection of freedom of speech. The full article can be found here.
